What am I reading?
People who are close to me always ask me this question, with hopes of getting recommendations for what to and/or what not to read. I gladly indulge them by sharing a synopsis of my recent reads and continue to recommend the best and share my experiences with the rest.
However, today my answer to this question is simply “Nothing”. I’m not reading anything 😊. Well, outside of my academic content, that is. I have little to zero guilt about that, and even if I were guilty there is nothing I could do about it because my concentration spam is non-existent at the moment.
It’s September- close to year-end and all its demands. I have the HIGHEST level of anxiety. I have soooo many things on my desk, and at the same time, I have zero interest in doing any of them.
I breathe- one deep breath at a time, one task at a time. That’s the best I can do at the moment.
I am scheduled to relocate in a few weeks, and so many things require some serious decision making- where am I going to stay, and for how long? What’s going to happen to the kids? What’s going to happen to my current residence etc. It’s a lot.
All this time my sudden incapacity for decision making is at its peak.
I AM OVERWHELMEND.
But guess what else I’m doing? I’m listening to Podcasts!
Yep. I am passing time I don’t have listening to some unsolicited advice on how to raise my kids, how to love myself and how to always show up confidently and many others in between. I’m listening to real crime investigative journalists tell gruesome stories of violent crimes in my country. I’m also listening to people share sad stories about their lived experiences etc.
It’s not all that bad though. In fact, not bad at all. Just That this newly found favourite pastime is taking so much of my time than I ever could have imagined (I have never really liked the thought of listening to people without seeing their body language- it gives off Ïbali kuMhlobo weNene” vibes.

Anyways, here’s a few that I really like, and I think you should give a go…
1. Dear Daughter
This is by a Kenyan (I hope I have this right) Podcaster Namulata Kombo. She speaks with mothers who have written letters to their daughter in an effort to share all that they wish their daughters to know about them, themselves and life in general.
As a mother to a little girl myself, it is no surprise that this is on top of my list.
I loved it so much that I also wrote Yama (another) letter that I share with you here
2. Convos & Cocktails with Lesego Thabi
On this podcast Lesego, also known as Coconut Kels, gathers with some lovely ladies for some light hearted content. The conversations are relatable, easy to follow and require no deep thoughts yet provoke some self- introspection at times. It’s like a typical conversation with your besties on an evening indoors with a few drinks.
3. True crime
Intriguing, captivating, and may leave you feeling a little more upset with the justice system. This one tells of crime stories, some never resolved, usually despite obvious evidence. The narration is great, investigators compelling. And our country is a shit whole.
4. The Sisterhood of the travelling Mgowo
Two friends (ladies) talk all things adulting. They are relatable, easy to listen to and just great, light intertainment. I don’t know how many times I have thought “oh that is soooo me” while listening to Sinesipho and Mixo.
These are all available on Apple Podcasts, and I have no idea where else. Check the out and enjoy.
